Hero of the Month: A Veteran provides comfort for fellow Veterans and their families.

At Americans Helping Americans®, we honor exceptional individuals through our “Hero of the Month” grant, designed to recognize those who go above and beyond to improve the lives of their community members. Heroes who demonstrate selfless acts, commendable deeds, or volunteer efforts receive $300, with the nominating organization receiving a $500 grant.

For September, we are proud to highlight Larry Zilliox from Haymarket, Virginia, director of culinary services at Willing Warriors, as our Hero of the Month. Larry was nominated by Laurie J. Raspler, president and founder of Cook For Vets, who has had the honor of working alongside him at the Willing Warriors Retreat.

A Hero Through and Through

As the director of culinary services, Larry dedicates his time and heart to supporting service members and veterans at the retreat. His commitment to bringing joy and comfort to those who have sacrificed for our country is evident in every aspect of his work.

Larry’s own service in the U.S. Air Force from 1977 to 1983 provided him with the skills that now shape his post-service life. He leads the culinary services team at Willing Warriors with compassion, dedication, and a focus on excellence.

Laurie Raspler describes Larry as “an unwavering source of support,” noting that his culinary talents not only provide sustenance but create a home-like environment for veterans and their families during their stay at the retreat. His meals, she says, are “elegantly prepared” and reflect his passion for food and sharing joy with others.

Leading with Passion and Purpose

Larry’s dedication extends far beyond the kitchen. He also leads the visiting chef program, a key element of the retreat’s mission to offer respite and care for wounded, ill, and injured service members and their families. Under Larry’s leadership, professional chefs and volunteers create “taste of home away from home” experiences, providing gourmet meals that bring comfort, connection, and nourishment to veterans and their loved ones.

Laurie further explains that Larry Zilliox exemplifies the values of a true hero through his unwavering commitment to serving the veteran community. His leadership, heart for helping others, and dedication to making a difference have had a lasting impact on countless lives.

A True Impact on the Veteran Community

Larry’s influence reaches beyond just those who partake in the meals he creates. His leadership and spirit of generosity inspire volunteers, chefs, and the entire Willing Warriors team to continue their mission of offering care and connection to those in need. Larry’s legacy of service and passion for giving back to veterans ensures that Willing Warriors remains a place of comfort and healing for service members and their families.

Larry Zilliox’s heartwarming presence, combined with his culinary talent and leadership, is why we are proud to honor him as Americans Helping Americans® September Hero of the Month.
