Unlock Potential: Supporting Our Orphan and Education Programs in Africa
For nearly three decades, Bread and Water for Africa® (BWA) has provided the essentials to countless orphaned and impoverished children across Africa. Through our dedicated Orphan Care Program and education programs in Africa, we are transforming lives by providing not just the basic necessities, but also the tools for a brighter future. Our holistic approach ensures that children receive the care, support, and education they need to break the cycle of poverty and build a better tomorrow. At the Kabwata Orphanage in Lusaka, Zambia, the Lewa Children’s Home in Eldoret, Kenya, the Lerato Children Village in Mutare, Zimbabwe, and the Watoto Wa Africa in Mwanza, Tanzania we are witnessing incredible stories of resilience and hope as these young lives blossom with new opportunities.
The Power of a Holistic Approach
Our Orphan Care Programs offer loving and supportive home environments where children receive not just essential care, including food, shelter, and healthcare, but also support, love, and guidance. But we believe that true transformation extends beyond basic needs. Education is the key that unlocks a world of possibilities.
Our Education Programs in Africa complement our Orphan Care Program by providing access to quality education for hundreds of children who otherwise would be missing out on a brighter future. We understand that education is more than just attending school; it’s about unlocking potential, fostering critical thinking, and building the skills needed to thrive.
Overcoming Challenges: The Fight for Education in Africa
Access to education in Africa is a significant challenge. Poverty, lack of infrastructure, and cultural barriers often prevent children from unlocking their full potential. Girls, in particular, face additional hurdles due to gender disparities.
Yet, amidst these challenges, stories of resilience and triumph emerge like that of Mumba. Born in a Zambian prison, Mumba was brought to the Kabwata Orphanage shortly after birth and raised by founder Angela Miyanda. From infancy to age 19, Kabwata was his home.
At 13, he dreamed of becoming an accountant, but later pursued a degree in Environmental Health Sciences at Mwanawasa Medical University. Graduating this year, Mumba is grateful to Bread and Water for Africa® supporters for helping him achieve his dreams: “Being educated is one of the best things I’ve ever wanted. Thank you for all your support and may the good Lord bless you.”
Through our programs, we witness firsthand the transformative power of education. Children who once faced a bleak future are now blossoming into confident and capable individuals.
A Story of Hope
Levi and Lily, twins born in May 2015 to a mentally ill mother living on the streets of Eldoret, were taken to a hospital by a good samaritan. After their birth, their mother was referred to mental health services, and the infants were placed in the newborn unit. Local officials moved them to the Lewa Children’s Home when they were just a month old. Now healthy and happy 6-year-olds, they attend Kepkeino Primary School and are thriving academically. Despite efforts to track down their relatives, Levi and Lily remain safe, secure, and cared for at the Lewa Children’s Home, supported by Bread and Water for Africa®.
Making a Difference: Our Impact
In 2023, we made significant strides in our mission to provide care and education to children in need:
281 orphans found loving homes and support through our Orphan Care Program.
836 students received quality education thanks to our school fee assistance program, sponsorships, and new school facilities.
58,000+ students in Ethiopia benefited from textbooks and reference materials.
These numbers represent more than statistics; they represent lives changed, futures shaped, and communities strengthened.
